Autodidact.
Totally immersed in the act of painting, Antoinette Smars paints and draws during all her waking hours. She calls painting her father tongue. Her works, always on panels, are timeless, as if they were immobilized in space, between heaven and earth. One plunges into her landscapes as one dives in water: in her lakes, rivers and sea coasts, which she renders so beautifully and with a rare refinement. What makes her work so peculiar is her tremendous ability to introduce, stealthily, a profusion of pearly light in a pictorial world dominated by sombre tonalities. Great art indeed, eons away from any far-fetched contemporary experiments.
